Headed for ALA 2010!!

So excited!!!  I am reading Mare's War and taking my copy with me to ALA this weekend to get it signed by my friend Tanita S. Davis. I'll be at the CSK breakfast on Tuesday cheering her on!

I can't believe I haven't actually read this great book before now. It has been on my TBR list since long before it came out. The story is about two teen girls on a road trip across the country with their grandmother. In the course of the long, boring drive she tells the girls the stories of her youth and growing up, and how she joined the Woman's Army during WWII in one of the first African American woman's battalions. It is particularly fascinating for me right now as my oldest son just left for Air Force Basic Training and I have no idea what that is like. By reading the experiences of Mare as she goes through Army Basic Training back in the day I am getting a tiny piece of what it might be like for my son. Another layer of the story in this book is the dynamic between generations and how things have changed for these Black women in the course of the last 60 years. The research and experience going into writing this amazing books leaves me breathless.

Anyway - back to ALA. I am also looking forward to seeing Liz Garton Scanlon, getting her books signed, and Laura Purdie Salas, getting her books signed, and Kelly R. Fineman of Writing and Ruminating fame. I am not going to make is into DC until Monday afternoon so I am bummed that I will miss seeing Trisha Stor-Hunt and Sara Lewis Holmes.  (I am reading Operation YES too, but when will I get it signed?)

Will you be there @ ALA10?
