Triolet Birthday Poem

Punkin at 4

Birthday Boy

Where is the boy who's four today?
Catch him if you can!
He's always busy and lost in play...
Where is the boy who's four today?
He's curious, loving, silly, fey
& bursting with a plan.
Where is the boy who's four today?
Catch him if you can!

-Andromeda Jazmon

My youngest son turned four this week and I wrote this poem for him. My four-year old fellow is wild, joyous, exuberant, ridiculous, out-of-bounds, silly, profound, driven, imaginative, indifferent, inquisitive, dogmatic and fluid; all this in a combination that makes for frequent fireworks and surprising delights. He's always got something in his pocket and a gleam in his eye. I can't wait to see what the year ahead will bring.

The Monday Poetry Stretch at Miss Rumphius Effect is: "A triolet; an eight line poem with a tightly rhymed structure and repeated lines." See the other poets' work here.

The Friday Poetry round up is being hosted by Julie Larios at The Drift Record. Enjoy!

Aww. He's still in the stage where his teeth look like wee Chiclets. You sound like a really happy Mom -- may the next year be as big an adventure.

Your poem perfectly captures the exuberance you described in him. What a gift. I hope you've shown him this fabulous poem and photo collage!

Absolutely wonderful. Although my boys are full grown now, your poem brought back that stage in their lives when they and I lived in a place of wonder. Thanks for that.

Thanks for all these happy comments. He is a darling whirlwind of a boy indeed. I told him the poem today at breakfast and he smiled. And you know he loves to see pictures of himself!! :)

Your beautiful poem makes me long for the days when my children were still young and filled with wonder at the world.

Cloudscome,

Love your triolet about your youngest son. The repetition works perfectly in this poem about a little boy.

I so enjoy spending time with my daughter who turned 29 in February--but there are times when I wish I could relive some of those special days when she was young.

Happy Birthday to your son!!!

Great poem, you worked the triolet so well. Happy birthday to the boy, he sounds very similar to my son at 8yrs.

I come from a family of girls but lately, it's been about boys. My brother has three. This is too cool. Happy birthday little man!

happy birthday to your beautiful boy! And I "splashed" you, so stop by my blog when you get a chance!

I am so glad you all like my poem. I was unsure about some of the words: Dogmatic and fluid are not too much a contrast? It sounds odd but that's how 4 year olds live. And "fey" - I hoped it wasn't too negative. I thought it meant something like tricky and mean and naughty like a bad fairy, which he can be... but now I'm looking it up and Webster says "doomed, visionary, fated, touched, crazy. not what I meant at all!

Anyway. Zetta thanks for the splash!! I'm honored. I really like your blog and will be stopping by frequently. I don't want to miss any of your haiku (or anything else).

I read "fey" in the way you meant it, and I'd think anyone who has a young boy around knows exactly what you mean by "dogmatic and fluid"... I nodded when I read it :). Triolets are such fun to write - I think I'll try a belated one for Wombat who turned 3 last week :D (Sorry the photos are getting behind - still taking them, just not finding time to post lol)

Ah, this poem reminds me of Else Homelund Minarik's poetry. Lovely.

Today, I posted the white currant in bloom.
