April 12 Haiku

red flowering maple

maple flowers
float red above the green grass;
rain darkens the trees

So... you know how in elementary school, they "teach" you how to write poetry by starting out with haiku? "Oh, it's simple, 5-7-5," is the idea. Hah! It would be better to start people off on heroic couplets. Anyway, in college, my creative writing professor kept shooting down my haiku (and rightfully so). Eventually, I submitted this one:

I wait and wait
For inspiration to come—
But still no haiku.

"Too sarcastic" was his comment.
