April 12 Haiku & Poem in Your Pocket

lacy froth
of petals round
bruised hearts

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At my school we are celebrating Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 15, since that fits our schedule better than the established date of April 17. As librarian I took it upon myself to collect poems for each classroom teacher. I made copies on half sheets of paper so that everyone in the school could chose one and fold it up and carry it in their pocket.
When I told my five year old about it last night at dinner he fell out of his chair laughing at "Poet in your Pants" day. My three year old was having fits over "Poet in Your Sock Day". Maybe I didn't explain it right...
I am getting a kick out of imagining the kids sitting down to dinner and hearing the usual, "What did you do at school today dear?"
Only to jump up and pull a tattered paper out of their jeans and read a poem to their delighted family. Can't you just see it?
I found a lot of great poems to print out in this week's Friday Poetry round up. How about you? What are you carrying in your pocket next week?
I can see it! And I can also see some of those kids still having the folded up poem thirty years later (as long as it doesn't go through the wash.)
Cloudscome,
All of your photographs and haiku have been so beautiful this week. I love the "lacy froth of petals."
I have been so busy posting at Wild Rose Reader this month--and tired from battling another sinus/respiratory infection--that I'm finding it difficult to leave comments at all the blogs I read every day.
You know, Cloudscome, I like "Poet in Your Pants" day just as much as "Poem in Your Pocket." Too funny. The other day I told Jr. that adults do not like to hear jokes about, er, gas, and he said, "Well, they do if they have a sense of humor."
LOL I was almost afraid to write "poet in your pants" on the internet. For a five year old it's just plain fall down funny. But for some folks... well you know.
Sara I was also imagining plenty of mothers doing the laundry and checking their kids' pockets. (hoping not to find worms or rusty nails) The look of surprise and wonder when they pull out Walt Whitman or Emily D...
I love 'poet in your sock' day! I've never done poem in your pocket the way it was intended. I always fill my pockets with poems and then go around giving them out to all the people who don't have one! Weeks ago, my boss asked me what poem I was going to give her this year ... seems I've started some kind of tradition!
