Happy Birthday Langston Hughes

Today is the birthday of Langston Hughes: February 1, 1902 - May 22, 1967. Here's what I posted last year for his birthday: Reviews of Visiting Langston and Coming Home.

Here's a haiku I wrote about him last year.

"Winter Moon" is a poem of his that I love so much and am thinking of today. I used to have a poster of it up in my first grade classroom and we all memorized it. It is a wonderful poem for beginner readers to learn. I took this picture while sharing the poem with my boys. Read "Winter Moon" online here. (scroll down the page)

Huh. I'd never read that one of his before. It's almost haiku! Gorgeous picture as well!

As always, GREAT picture. Perfect match to the poem. When I grow up, I want to be just as smart and creative and artistic as you!

What a picture! I can't stop staring at it. It would be lovely as a poster, with the Hughes poem superimposed on it.

What a perfect pairing of picture and poem.

My girls and I have been reading repeatedly the wonderful Jane Yolen/Andrew Fusek Peters anthology from last year, Here's a Little Poem, and every time we get to his poem about letting the rain kiss you, I am wow'ed all over again. And my daughter loves that notion of letting the rain kiss you (though she's waiting patiently for some SNOW to kiss her already).

I love the poetry of Langston Hughes. That photograph is beautiful--and a perfect complement to his poem. Lovely post in honor of a great writer.

Even though it's winter, it's a rainy day today, and so I've been thinking of April Rain Song, even before I read this post or my Writer's newsletter that told me it was Hughes's birthday today.

Love the picture and the poem you posted.

I am so glad you all are loving Langston today with me. It's raining here too and April Rain Song is another of my favorites! Even though it is freezing cold I am letting that rain kiss me today.

I just spent more time than I really have at the website you linked too--I was blown away by this one, two poems up from yours:

When Sue Wears Red

When Susanna Jones wears red
Her face is like an ancient cameo
Turned brown with the ages.

Come with a blast of trumpets,

That's what so nice about Poetry Friday...

Nice winter moon.
Enjoy finding your site. I, too work in a library--though not MLS degreed.
If I'm not mistaken, Langston Hughes is an Ohioan--I'm in Cincinnati.

nina - Yes he grew up and went to high school in Cleveland. Later he moved out west and then to NYC. Ohio is a great state!

Charlotte - That is another great one! I could read his poetry all day. Thanks for sharing it with us.
